[This journal is B&W specific] ------ First you ought to ask yourself, what is contrast? Contrast is the difference between the tones of grey that your image has. ------ For a black and white image to have good contrast, you need to have the whitest whites and the darkest blacks in your image, as well as a good mix of greys in between. Just ask yourself: Is the color adding anything to my image? Does it have a part in the message? If no, you don't want to have color in your image. ------------ Or, is the color making the image too busy? A lot of the time, color takes away visual focus from the texture or other visual element of the image. If you remove the color as a visual obstacle, then the image can better speak to the viewers. ------------ In conclusion: Most images should probably be in greyscale.

You can't really beat K-x for the money.
ISO goes up to 100-12,800, Image Quality is great, Compact Size, APS-C (1.5x), JPEG render on-board is great. And it costs $400 or less.
